Story:
While there is still a debate over where artichokes originated from, in ancient Rome they were considered delicacies of the rich and famous. To the point that it was decreed only the aristocracy could plant, harvest and eat this tasty vegetable. So it was a surprise when the famed historian and naturalist, Pliny the Elder ( 23 A.D. – 79 A.D.) remarked that artichokes were “one of the earth’s monstrosities.” That as he continued to feast on them with honey and vinegar and a splash of cumin until his death. Where it was revealed that he had said that so the masses would never know what they were missing!
Materials:
Acrylic and fluorescent paints on heavy French watercolor paper, bathed in a mixture of acrylic UV-resistant polymers, bordered with insets of late 1800s Indian sari cloth, outside border panels of late 1800s ox hide overprinted and painted using 18th century Indonesian Batik stamps veiled over with mulberry paper, adorned at top with Chinese Song Dynasty (1100 A.D. – 1150 A.D) white coin Da Guan Tong Bao with images of Sun, Moon and Stars affixed with melted religious wax collected from holy temples and monasteries, all mounted onto archival museum board.
